Briefly about Claws Mail

From having used webmail solutions for several years I have decided to roll back to the old way of doing things; a local email client.

Before I started using webmail I had tested almost every client available for linux and with mixed results. Some clients have been too “old school” and difficult to use, some have been nothing more than a pretty interface but lack of features. Read more…

Why I (still) use GKrellM

I love GKrellM and this post is to explain why. GKrellM is - I admit - an “old” program and not many people, especially newer linuxusers, seem to know exaktly what it is. Read more…

Some conclusions

I’ve come to the conclusion that gkrellm still is a kick-ass program, that Evolution now is useable (compared to when I last tried it), that my cold still is going strong after two weeks.

One year later..

Wow, almost one year since I updated!

So what’s new? Not much. Life goes on..
I still love to customize my linux desktop though. Here’s a screenshot to feast your eyes on.

Today drebel.net hit it’s 10,000′th spam comment.

Compiz Fusion Screenshots

The Beryl project is now discontinued merged (back) into Compiz = Compiz Fusion.

For help I can recommend these two discussion forums:

There are some differences between Beryl and Compiz Fusion but nothing that one can’t learn and get used to. Compiz Fusion does have some sexy plugins though and I’m really loving it so far. Settings are easily changed by using the CompizConfig Settings Manager (often referred to as ccsm, which also is the command used to run it). Regarding window decorations you can just keep using Emerald.

First screenshot shows the Expo plugin. Hot? Yes.
Second screenshot shows the main view of ccsm.

The images are - as usual - clickable thumbnails. ;-)

Running Windows inside Ubuntu Feisty Fawn

I’m now *really* enjoying my newly upgraded Ubuntu system. Since I have hardware that supports virtualization I decided to give KVM/QEMU a go and make a virtual windows install inside Ubuntu.

I installed Windows 2000 Professional and can now run that from my KDE/Beryl desktop. The virtual OS has full network support so I can browse the web and whatnot from it.

To install the virtual OS is pretty much straight forward. Follow the instructions here, here and here.

Networking was what I had issues with, until I found this brilliant guide. Following that instead of the instructions in the above provided installation guides saves you alot of blood, sweat and tears.

You can also use Samba to create a directory on the host where the guest has full access. To do that you need to add -smb to the qemu commandline. You’ll need to have Samba up and running on the host and also make sure you have a smb user you can log on to the share with. Go here to get some pointers on how to set it up.

The command I use to launch my guest OS is:

qemu -cdrom /dev/cdrom -hda w2kpro.img -m 1024 -net nic,vlan=0 -net user,script=/etc/qemu-ifup -smb /home/fileshare

Quick tip: FTP using Konqueror

If you can’t decide what ftp client to use in KDE then try to use the filemanager; Konqueror.

Simply open up two tabs. First one for the local source folder, second one for the target folder on the ftp server. To connect just type the address to the server in the address bar (ftp://ftp.servername.com). You’ll be prompted to enter username and password. Once connected go back to your local folder tab. Copy the file you with to upload. Change to the other tab and simply paste it.
